561 Liberty Shotgun

 Fun Fact #561

Liberty Shotgun

Good Morning Everyone, I hot Halloween didn't drive you Batty yesterday so today here’s just some miscellaneous Fun Facts about The Statue of Liberty (and associates) given shotgun style.

  • The Inside of the Statue was painted then coated in a special plastic so Vandlistic “Tagging” Can be washed off easily.

  • Liberty Island, and the Statue have been illegally seized multiple times throught their history for various protests, and political movements.

  • The Head of the Statue was on display at the Paris WOrld’s Fair before it was given to the US

  • The Statue has survived multiple explosions during The World Wars with the most notable being The Black Tom Island Explosion which was caused by German Saboteurs. Interestingly it wasnt the first time that ISland (made from discarded trash) had blown up, but it was the first time it was done on purpose and it killed 7 people. The Torch and it’s Balcony have been closed to Tourists since The Black Tom Explosion in 1916, but today there is a 24/7 live broadcast from the Torch Balcony you can find online.

  • It has become a touchstone for Science Fiction (and some other) writers

    •  In books and Films it’s Had its head Ripped off (CloverField), Been buried in the sand (Planet Of The Apes), been a criminal Hideout (Escape from New York), Been Blown Up Countless times, has gone for strolls (Doctor Who, and Ghostbusters), and been abducted by aliens at least twice.

    • “Where would science fiction be without the Statue of Liberty? For decades it has towered or crumbled above the wastelands of deserted Earth—giants have uprooted it, aliens have found it curious ... the symbol of Liberty, of optimism, has become a symbol of science fiction's pessimistic view of the future.”  –Robert Holdstock, Consulting Editor of “The Science Fiction Encyclopedia”

  • An earlier concept of the Statue was used to create the foam Goddess Of Democracy statue used in the Tiananmen Square Protests, until it was taken down, dragged behind a tank and finally smashed by Soldiers clearing the square. Since then Replicas of the statue have been made all around the world with one replica located on Capital Hill in DC.

  • Having Given up on all hope of ever using the torch as a Lighthouse, the original torch was replaced in 1984 (It was in need of repair anyway) and replaced whose torch is paneled with 24 karat gold allowing it to reflect sunlight during the day or spotlights at night. The Original is now properly lit and on display inside the Museum contained within The Statue’s Pedestal.

  • Jack Brutus –another War Bond Mascot–

    • was a Famous Dog involved as the mascot of Company K during the Spanish American War.  It was popular until the end of WW2 for countries to represent themselves with a Dog mascot and so the US chose the one which had Managed to distinguish itself. Later he was replaced by the 3-legged Dog “Stumpy” because stumpy had a Purple heart (only animal to receive one), but even stumpy was abandoned in the 60s because it was seen as unethical to use the image of a Dog in war material.
