Fun Fact #290
The Lady with a Lamp
It was a quiet day along the Rhine River when news of the Crimean war reached the German town of Kaiserswerth. Here a young woman named Florence Nightingale would hear of the horrible conditions, and high casualty rates. Taking her 4 months of medical education she left for Crimea immediately. Once there she introduced basic hygiene like handwashing, and an organization pattern for nurses to reduce the workload without sacrificing care. She even invented a new type of graph (now known as the Pie Chart) in order to better show nutrition requirements she needed to supply for her patients. By the end of the war this woman who had previously been known as “Shy” had become world famous for reducing the death rate in the war from 42% to just 2% and invented the Modern field of Nursing.
