Fun Fact #400
Green Bay Day
Wisconsin, –like any place run by Humanity– tends to be a little weird at times. Inhabited by the local Winnebago, and Ojibwe or “People of the Big Voice” most of modern Green Bay Wisconsin spoke a variant of Siouan. While they had heard tales of strange men from across the sea they didn't think much of it. That is until one strange day in 1634 when Jean Nicolet came to their shore in a chinese robe (disputed) and fired two pistols into the air.
He did this because he had been told that they may know of a passage to the Pacific and fired the weapons to show his authority on behalf of the French. Surprisingly it didn't sour relations, as Nicolet’s strangeness gave way to a smooth talking Siouan negotiator. He managed to get shown the majority of the Fox river before he finally left for home. While he failed to find the rumored “Northwest passage”, he was the first European to discover Lake Michigan, and Wisconsin. His error also proved quite the stroke of luck to Green Bay as well, turning the place into a local trade Hub with Fox River later being discovered to connect to the The Mississippi acting as the trading lifeline
between northern French Holdings in Quebec and those in southern Louisiana. Sorry about this fun facts length I had a lot to unPACK(ERS!) in there
Enjoy the kickoff to the Football season everyone (Parsonally I'm a bears fan myself). THanks for reading and have a wonderful night!
