Rise of the Cubs
By the time 1906 rolled around the Chicago White Stockings had been called many nicknames from “Anson's’ Colts”, “The Rough Riders”, and “The Orphans” but these all were terrible for marketing with only the Orphans being accepted for a long time. Thankfully though they stayed center of the pack for their league and as such rarely made the news on their own. Yet that changed when the Orphans would set a record with 116-36 season score losing the World series to “The Hitless-wonders better known as The White Sox”--Chicago Tribune.
With such a score they had to change their name, resulting in owner Charles W. Murphy deciding to change their name to the nickname the Sox had mocked them with years ago when their team was made up of rookies: “The Chicago Cubs”. The Cubs would then follow this up with back-to-back world series wins in 1907 and 1908 before buying Wrigley Field (then Weeghman Park) in in 1914.
Today, the Chicago Cubs are known for being the Oldest, continuous sports team in history (Having run from amateur league in 1870 to MLB today | 153 years) and own the 2nd oldest field in MLB.
