For Science!
In 2008, The University of Washington released the screensaver Rosseta@Home. The Goal was simple: use the computing power of the general public to run an algorithm to find solutions to folding proteins. These protein formations could then be used to create more effective medication to combat diseases, as well as other beneficial uses. The issue they were not prepared for however, was when owners of the game got frustrated at not being able to help Rossetta, and so the 3-d Puzzle game Foldit was made. Utilizing Humanity's knack for pattern recognition, the game has come up with several treatments for fast mutating diseases like Aids, HIV, and M-PMV, as well as discovering new enzymes for use in Synthetic Chemistry (Chemical reactions used in a Manufacturing setting).
