The Flair Of Fairs #553
Fun Fact #553
The Flare of Fairs
While no one knows when the first fair was held, we do have records going back more than 4,000 years to fairs and Celebrations such as The Feast of Tabernacles. However the first records of an economic fair was in the Book Ezekiel where it mentions the City of Tyre holding fairs which through archaeological digs have been found to be large gatherings of Foreign traders who met in Tyre thanks to its central location along several trade routes. From these early beginnings fairs would become a vital part of not just the Middle East but spread across the Mediterranean under the Rule of The Romans who saw it as a great way to spread unity, industry and meld together their melting pot of cultural backgrounds under their pantheon. Others under Rome used it to help form the basis of Freedom of religion since you could gather people of a particular background and discuss your religion and lifestyle without disrupting the larger region as a whole. It's actually from the latin word “feria” meaning “Holy day” that we get the English word “Fair” from today.
