Cameo

In the late 1927, the very first talking movie (The Jazz Singer) was produced and ushered in the Golden age of Movies (1927-1960). Practically forgotten in this golden shadow however, was another innovation: The Cameo.

The word originally meant “A small role which stood out from the rest” and was intended for side characters which appeared for a second or two to push the plot along then are never seen again. However, then something strange happened: older actors from The Silent Era began applying for and getting these no-name roles bringing their notoriety with them. This would then evolve the idea of Cameos into a way to honor people according to the wishes of the creator and are still primarily used this way even in the current era.
