Fun Fact #453

 Fun Fact #453

The chicken crossed what?!

Comedy has been around for a very long time, although the word comedy only dates back to 425BC with the name originating in ancient Athens. At its simplest the goal of Comedy is to amuse, and Comedians use this skill to the best of their abilities using an array of strategies from Slapstick to Parody.

Yet one of the most versatile is the humble Pun (double-entendre or double meaning) which is one of the oldest formats thanks to its simplicity of abusing the double meanings that words or phrases can gather over time. Actually because of this puns can be hard to pick up on when spoken. Thus in many places of the world saying puns out loud is considered a great insult, as it can be seen as “Trying to sneak by” thus insulting the person's intelligence, or when the punchline is stressed the person can take it as an insult to their intelligence that you assumed they’d miss it –yikes!

Just because I can, here are some examples of puns.

  • “My wife told me to take the spider out instead of killing it.

    •  We had some drinks, cool guy, he wants to be a web developer.”

  • I really love my furniture

    • Me and my recliner go way back.

  • A steak pun

    • Is a rare medium well done

  • People are making Apocalypse jokes

    • Like there’s no tomorrow
