Fun Fact # 17
A Cool Trick
Have you ever been in a hurry to cool a drink down? Well, there is a way to lower its temperature at most by 24 degrees a minute (until it gets to around 15* ). You see when you add salt to ice the ice melts but during the chemical reaction the ice will take in heat from anything around it at a drastically increased rate so if you have a bowl of Ice and you put a soda can at room temperature inside so its submerged then add salt at most it will drop 24 degrees a minute giving you a nice cool drink in a matter of minutes. This same method was used to make ice-cream before refrigeration in places which employed a Soda-jerk, so you'd take ice from your icebox add salt and mix in milk and some cream as the ice melted giving you a salty ice-cream to which you could easily flavor how you liked with Liquids or toppings. Two of the most common flavors were Vanilla extract and Malt balls. However by far the most popular flavoring was alcohols of various types as it was one of the only legal ways to consume Liqueur during probation as a "Numbing Cream". There is only one place left in Rockford which still makes Ice-cream in this way, and that is North Park Pharmacy who still employs a soda-jerk every other weekend.
