 Fun Fact #431

Toying around

In 1936, Ole Kirk Christiansen came up with the internal motto “det bedste er ikke for godt” (Only the best is good enough) for his company “Lego”. Following this motto his son Godtfred created the modern Lego Brick system out of ABS plastic with tolerances as tight as 10 micrometers. This system has since become the basis for the 2nd largest game company of all time (Skylanders beat it for a few years before it retook the title, only for Pokémon to finally overtake it) producing board, card, and video games. Today Lego is the largest manufacturer of tires in the word (Lego set tires at 870,000 a day or 318 million a year), sells an average of 600,000 bricks a day (7 bricks a second) and even has its own Lego robotics (Mindstorms).

Today’s activity is that of “Studio” on Bricklink. It's a CAD system (3-d Modeling) made specifically for lego with access to the full library of lego pieces so people can design their own sets. Afterwards it can then be turned into a set of instructions along with a parts list. It's honestly pretty cool and can be useful when teaching kids robotics, basic mechanical mechanisms or simply just letting them play with Legos while on a road trip. The app is free on Brlicklink’s website (it's designed to encourage people to buy the parts list of the sets you design which is why there is no paid version of the app). Below is an example of two poseable figures I made back in highschool with the app.
