Fun Fact #200 Saturn's Sickle
Fun Fact 200
Saturn’s Sickle
Saturn is named after the Roman god of Farming, and now it seems like that name was very well chosen. With the planet being made of nitrogen, and hydrogen, rings with oxygen, propane and butane, and its moons filled with raw material Saturn’s orbit has long looked like a viable place for a colony if Humanity ever takes to the stars. This in turn has inspired many works of fiction to be made with this premise. Currently the most appealing for Nasa is Diome, which needs resources which conveniently happen to be held within Saturn's rings -- and is free of tectonic activity or methane weather patterns which could damage structures on the 4 largest moons of Saturn
Yet there is a problem, Saturn is very far from the sun and even domed crops might not get enough sunlight, which is why part of Elon musk’s plan for space (which he outlined in 2011) has those materials being brought into the inner part of the solar system, specifically Mars, to help accelerate the process of making it habitable which is Musk’s ultimate goal.
