Fun Fact #386

York’s Escape

As the only volunteer slave (Or slave at all for that matter to have willingly joined the mission, York expected his freedom upon their return to civilization. He would instead be sold to the Government who saw York as a valuable piece of Government property as the slave which crossed the continent". He would escape shortly afterwards after which he disappears from Western History. The Sioux however have an oral history in which they say he remembered how they thought he was a Bear-God because of his skin and returned to them. Here he stayed, even helping to train a man who would one day become Chief known as Sitting Bull. Oral histories are not considered fact by most historians however, and thus this story is treated as a legend rather than fact by those outside the Native American communities.
