End of the Corps
By the time a battered Corps of Discovery made it back to St. Louis, they had crossed the continental divide, and made contact with several Tribes along all the lands in-between. While they failed to find a Northern passage, their story excited the American people. The idea of lands which were beautiful as The Redwood Forest, strange as The Badlands and wild as the Great Falls of the Missouri river excited them and helped to form a desire to travel west. Over time this would grow into the movement now known as “Manifest Destiny” and would use that era’s personification of America “Miss Columbia”.
