In Darkest Knight
It was the fall of 938 and Otto the 1st, King of East Francia had just deposed Eberhard from Bavaria and placed his loyal Uncle Berthold as Duke over Bavaria. Yet, not all was well as he had lost a considerable number of people in the war. Looking back to the military conquests of Charlemagne he got the idea to reform the famous Ritter Cavalry. Ritters were Cavalry who wore heavier armor than standard operating as in small groups as shock troops but after the end of the Carolingian Empire their order fell apart.
Now Otto sought out the grandsons of the Ritter and had them help teach a new generation, this time armed with technology stolen from the Magyar –The Stirrup–, heavier yet improved armor, tactics to attack as a group instead of as individuals and horses bred to be faster and stronger.
Using this new “Heavy Cavalry” Otto would go on to unite the German kingdoms under his rule and now, now it was time to end the Magyar invasions once and for all.
The following summer The Magyar sent their largest incursion yet with the goal of installing Eberhard back on the throne of Bavaria and starting a civil war in Otto’s empire. Yet on August 10th, 955 the speed, and coordination of the Ritter utterly crushed the Magyar at the Battle of Lechfeld resulting in the death of Eberhard. The few Magyar who returned the Hungry bore tales of this new terror, ending the shadow of the invasions.
In reward Otto’s Ritters would be given land of their own and bestowed the titles of Nobility meaning “One who serves the sovereign” better known as “Knights”. The knights would then name Otto as Otto The Great, King of the Holy Roman Empire.
