Fun Fact #315
The Dawn Duelers
First made in the early 1500s, The Lantern Shield was primarily used for duels at dusk or dawn during the period when duels were outlawed on the Italian Peninsula. Its design was a simpler buckler shield, with an internal lantern whose light shone through several slits in the metal, or be fully exposed suddenly by moving a flap to disorientate an opponent. It proved to be a terrible shield, yet it grew to be used by citizens who found that criminals were scared of the light. Helping to reintroduce the idea of “Security Lighting” and the revival of The Street Lamp which has not been seen since roman candle pots had fallen out of favor.
