Fun Fact #56 The Trademark Bowl
Daily Fact # 56
The Trademark Bowl
Famous for enforcing its brand, the NFL has prohibited Commercial events, TV ads , and even churches from using the terms NFL, Super Bowl, or Super Sunday. Instead, they were instructed to use the term “The Big Game” -- at leat until 2006. In 2006 the NFL attempted to prohibit even that name, only to be foiled by The Mega Millions Lottery who had been running their "Big Game" Lotto since 1996.
This debacle would end up inspiring “The Fair Use Act” which was signed into law in 2008. This law codified the fair use doctrine, which permits limited use of Copyrighted material without having to ask for permission first. This is what allows Youtube videos, documentaries, --even-- this blog to operate without fear of being sued or sent cease and desist letters.
As always thanks for reading and please have a wonderful day!
