Fun Fact # 277 The Driftless

Fun Fact #277

The Driftless

115,000 years ago, the Midwest was covered in a thick ice sheet which crushed and flattened the ground underneath it. Yet in the heart of all this destruction lay one land untouched by the glacier, and where life flourished, known today as “The Driftless”. Named for the lack of glacial drift, this land has been able to maintain the flora and fauna similar to what you would find along the East coast rather than the surrounding Midwest. With 85% of it’s range within Southwest Wisconsin it is the heart of the Wisconsin Cheese industry. If you’re interested in a place to visit, Wildcat Mountain State Park is regarded as one of the best locations to see.
